Annotated Bibliography 11/04/2021

Department of Environmental Conservation , N. Y. S. (2018, January 29). Native Flowers for Gardening and Landscaping . Retrieved November 3, 2021, from https://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/lands_forests_pdf/factnatives.pdf.

This document contains information provided by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation about native plants in our state, general care of the plant (soil, light), how tall the plant will get, and the zone of the plant. For my project I want to emphasize growing flowers that are good for the location that we are in (planting native plants) and how to grow them. This document is a great place to start for this information because it is a well-organized collection of plants that I would be interested in planting. The source is from a well-respected organization (New York State Department of Environmental Conservation), and therefore it is incredibly useful in determining what plants are good to plant, not simply for ease of growing, but also the effects that they will have on the location. This source can help me come up with a list of plants I would like to investigate further and eventually grow in my pots.

Parks and Recreation, C. of N. Y. (n.d.). Gardening with New York City Native Plants. NYC Government. Retrieved November 4, 2021, from https://naturalareasnyc.org/media/pages/in-print/research/8cf424230f-1601408873/nrg_publication_gardening_with_nyc_native_plants.pdf.

This document is from the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, it contains information on Native plants in NYC and how to grow them. Information such as “what is a native plant”, “why go native in a garden”, and plants that work well in boxes can all be found in this source. Towards the end of the document there is also a bibliography of sources for further reading on the topic, which could be useful. My project is going to start in containers, and therefore looking at what grows well in a place like New York City where most of the gardens are containers will be helpful to determine what flowers would actually be successful in the location that I am using. There is also a section of the document with details for how to create a butterfly garden. This could be interesting to me if I am attempting to attract different insects with my garden.

Roach, M. (2020, May 15). How (and Why) to Use Native Plants. The New York Times. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/15/realestate/how-and-why-to-use-native-plants.html

This article is useful to me because it can assist me in explaining why I am so interested in Native plants. Many people don’t know the benefits of native plants vs. invasive plants and why they are important to learn about when gardening. A simple to understand article from a reliable source like The New York Times is important to my project because I can use it to learn why native plants are important and teach others why they are important as well. This document also contains lots of helpful information about how to use native plants in gardens, which will be important to me when I try to plant some in pots. There are interesting pieces of information about pollinators in this article that are useful to me when determining other purposes of my garden and how to accomplish them through the plants that I want to grow.
